Sharon van Rouwendaal ends her collaboration with French swimming coach Philippe Lucas after seven years. The Olympic champion in the 10 kilometer open water swimming will train with the German (federal) coach Bernd Berkhahn in Magdeburg.

Lucas, known for his spartan training regimen, is extremely grateful to Van Rouwendaal. “Under his leadership I became Olympic champion, but I am ready for a change and something new. In the last year I often started to doubt the cooperation with Philippe.”

Last season, Van Rouwendaal trained a number of times in Germany with the group in which, among others, Florian Wellbrock, the German world champion in the 10 kilometers, trains. “I liked it very much and now I have made the decision.”

In five weeks the five-time European champion will move to Germany to start her preparation for Tokyo. She is already qualified for the Olympics. “I am happy that I can now prepare without any worries and with full conviction.”
