Manuel and Ledecky win in Greensboro

Olympic gold medalists Simone Manuel and Katie Ledecky, along with fellow Olympian Hali Flickinger, picked up wins in their signature events Thursday night during the second evening of finals at the TYR Pro Swim Series at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Manuel, the reigning Olympic and world champion in the 100m free, finished nearly a full second ahead of the field with a time of 53.44, just three tenths off the series record of 53.12, held by Sarah Sjostrom. Allison Schmitt, the 2012 Olympic champion in the 200m free, took second in 54.41 while representing Sun Devil Swimming. Team Elite’s Catie DeLoof grabbed third in 55.02.

Ledecky claimed the women’s 400m free win in 4:01.68, almost nine seconds ahead of Schmitt’s 4:10.52. Ally McHugh of Wisconsin Aquatics finished third in 4:10.68. Meanwhile, Flickinger topped the women’s 200m fly field in 2:07.65, with TAC Titans’ Charlotte Hook (2:10:10) and Athens Bulldog’s Megan Kingsley (2:10.26) rounding out the top three.

North Carolina State had a strong night, with Sophie Hansson claiming the women’s 100m breast title in 1:07.89, just in front of 2016 Olympian Molly Hannis (1:07.95). Hansson’s teammates, Nyls Korstanje and Coleman Stewart, placed second and third in the men’s 100m free, with Harvard’s Dean Farris getting the win in 49.74.

In other finals, Athens Bulldog’s Andrew Wilson touched first in the men’s 100m breast in 1:00.76, while Dart Swimming’s Luca Urlando won the men’s 200m fly (1:56.00). Boulder City Henderson’s Zane Grothe wrapped up the night with a win in the men’s 400m free, his second win of the meet. His 3:48.80 topped the rest of the heat by more than three seconds.
