“I felt pretty comfortable my first thousand,” Twichell said. “The plan was to do that, then descend the last five 100s. Overall felt pretty good. When I tried to pick it up felt my training, but that’s kind of what I expected this time of year.”

U.S. National Team member Zane Grothe also turned in a decisive victory in the men’s race, touching in 15:18.71. Chris Wieser of Dart Swimming was second in 15:40.33, followed by Christian Bayo of Tac Titans in third in 15:43.31.

“I can’t remember the last time I raced long course in the fall, so I guess I’m at a good spot now getting under 15:20,” Grothe said.  “My biggest goal was to find a rhythm. I’ve been working on a little bit of technique change to get better at that 1500m distance.”
