Team SA: How they fared on Saturday

Team SA were in action across five codes at the African Games on Saturday – badminton, swimming, cycling, soccer and tennis. They had started the day in second spot on the medals table with 37. 

Women’s 800m freestyle: Samantha Randle finished second in 8:55.32 and Carla Antonopoulos finished fourth in 9:07.74 in the women’s 800m freestyle.

Men’s 50m freestyle: Brad Tandy finished third in 22.21 and Doug Erasmus fourth in 22.57, with gold being won in 22.17.

Women’s 50m freestyle: Erin Gallagher is the fastest women in water in Africa after winning the 50m freestyle gold in a new South African and African record 24.95 with Emma Chelius taking bronze in 25.25.

Men’s 1500m freestyle: Roberto Gomes finished fifth in 15:48.53 and Michael McGlynn finished sixth in 15.56.97.

Women’s 100m backstroke: Kerryn Herbst claimed the bronze in 1:03.76 after leading at halfway.

Men’s 100m backstroke: Martin Binedell claimed the bronze medal in 56.20 in a race where the Games record was broken.

Women’s 200m IM: Jessica Whelan won the gold medal in 2:19.44 while Christin Mundell finished third in 2:21.70.

Men’s 200m IM: Neil Fair took the bronze medal in 2:04.15  while Ayrton Sweeney tied for fourth in 2:04.87.

Women’s 4x100m medley relay: Team SA’s (Herbst, Corbett, Gallagher, Chelius) struck gold in 4:12.42, beating Egypt by 7.65 seconds!

Men’s 4x100m medley relay: GOLD! Team SA’s relay (Binedell, Alaric Basson, Coetzee, Erasmus) won the gold medal in 3:40.24 in a new Games record.

Swimming have ended their programme at the African Games. @TeamSA19 won 45 medals (20 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze). Team SA close Saturday on 50 medals (23 gold) and lie 2nd on the medals table behind Egypt
