Swanson, Women’s 800 free relay win gold on Day 4 of Pan Ams for Team USA

The United States won seven medals in swimming Friday at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The Americans’ medal haul on day 4 of the competition included two gold, three silver and two bronze.

Charles Swanson won the first gold of the night in the men’s 400m IM in 4:11.46. His time was 32-hundredths of a second off the Pan American Games record set by Thiago Pereira of Brazil in 2015. Swanson dominated the field, finishing about eight seconds ahead of silver medalist Leonardo Santos of Brazil, who touched in 4:19.41. Brandon Almeida of Brazil was third in 4:21.10.

Claire Rasmus, Alexandra Walsh, Sarah Gibson and Meaghan Raab then won gold in the women’s 800m free relay in 7:57.33, nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Canada (7:59.16). Brazil was third in 8:07.77.

Margo Geer missed out on her fourth gold medal of the meet by 15-hundredths of a second, finishing second in the women’s 50m free in 25.03. Etiene Medeiros of Brazil took gold in 24.88. Geer’s teammate, Madison Kennedy, won bronze in 25.14.

Just as they did in last night’s final of the 100m free, Nathan Adrian and Michael Chadwick finished second and third in the men’s 50m free, turning in times of 21.87 and 21.99. Bruno Fratus of Brazil was first in 21.61.

Drew Kibler, Grant House, Samuel Pomajevich and Christopher Wieser wrapped up the night with a silver in the men’s 800m free relay in 7:14.82. Brazil won gold and set a meet record in 7:10.66.

The United States’ medal tally after four days stands at 37 – 17 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze.
