Nelson Mandela Bay’s unique duathlon event will show off the 4 main metro beaches this Sunday.

Pollok Beach, Hobie Beach, Humewood Beach and Kings Beach are all stops on the relay style duathlon known as the City Lodge 3 Beaches Challenge. Competitors will have to enter the water at Pollok Beach exit to clock in at Hobie and Humewood Beaches and finish the swim at Kings Beach. For those brave competitors who will be competing individually there is a 3km run to finish with as they make their way back to Pollok Beach, running along the stunning Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront.

The swim legs of 1.6km, 0.8km and 1.1km offer the opportunity for different levels of swimmers to tackle the challenge with more experienced swimmers in a team perhaps taking on the tougher first leg. Non-swimmers also get an opportunity to take part by doing the run section for team or swim only competitor.

Town Lodge general manager in Port Elizabeth Glenn Pappin has also mentioned the one-of-a-kind nature of the event saying, “I believe the 3 Beaches Challenge is something different from your average fun run or swim event and this uniqueness has contributed hugely to the event’s recent popularity and growth.”

He added that he thought the event would continue to grow seeing as though Nelson Mandela Bay was one of the most active cities in South Africa where people are always looking for events which are different from the norm.

Someone who will be trying to keep the norm going is defending champion and recent River Mile winner Slater Black. He will have his hands full against a field which is becoming increasingly competitive each year. It will be fascinating to see if the talented swimmer will be able to hold off the challengers in an event which tests endurance in and out of the water.

The 3 Beaches Challenge will start at 9am on Sunday morning at Pollok Beach with prize giving for the event taking place at approximately 11am. With a wooden finisher’s medal as unique as the event and a Blu Smooth wetsuit as part of the prizes the 3 Beaches Challenge will be one event not to be missed.
