Fun in the Sun at Kariega Swim

by ZwemZa on December 20th, 2018

Just under 200 swimmers from around South Africa will be expected to descend on the Kariega River in Kenton for this year’s Flying Fish swim.

This holiday season Kenton-On-Sea will play host to one of the more social swim races of the year.
With the focus less on speed and more about completion, this bucket list swim will take place at the scenic Kariega River on Saturday 29 December.

The event was founded back in 2014 when four individuals swam with the tide to a local pub called Horns Up some 5km up river. The event exploded thereafter growing from 4 to 37 in 2015, 83 in 2016 and 113 entrants in 2017. This year swimmers will receive a silicone swim cap, finishers medal and plenty of lucky draw prizes including a top of the range Blusmooth wetsuit.

There is also a good cause behind it, with the race raising awareness for the Periwinkle charity. At the event, donations are taken in for the charity and these funds are then used to aid various underprivileged groups in the area.

The event has grown tremendously since Julian Dovey, Royce Long, John Francis and Craig Lowe swam up river for their drink but has kept the social, fun aspect of it going. There is no doubt that on the 29th of December the Kariega River and Horns Up will be the place to be.
