South Africa’s best open water swimmers will compete at the 2019 South African National Open Water Swimming Championships at Marina Martinique, Jeffery’s Bay in March as they embark on their quest to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It will be the third consecutive year that the #2019SANATOWS will be held at the Marina Martinique in Jeffery’s Bay, Kouga Municipality, Eastern Cape.

Brenton Williams from the Kouga Municipality said the event, to be held on 2 & 3 March 2019 underlined the region’s reputation as one of the national hubs for elite open water swimming.

“Competition is fierce when it comes to hosting these world-class, high profile sporting events, but the Eastern Cape continues to attract new and returning event partners who have faith that our region will put on a great show for a national and international audience,” Williams said. “Our offerings are strong and securing events such as including the Olympic trial, positions us as a major sporting and tourism destination.

Swimming South Africa chief executive Shaun Adriaanse expected the championships to attract more than 350 participants and said Marina Martinique in JBay would be the ideal venue for the event.

“We have forged a strong working relationship with the Kouga Municipality over the past three years and thank them for their continued support of swimming in South Africa,” he said.

“The national open water championship is a hugely popular event and Marina Martinique is a truly iconic location to host this prestigious national swimming competition.”

The 2018 South African National Open Water Swimming Championships attracted 320 entries, which included athletes from Hungary, Brazil, Germany, Namibia and Azerbaijan. Indications are that there could very well be a larger international contingent at the #2019SANATOWS set to lock horns with South Africa’s finest.

#2019SANATOWS is certainly shaping up to be the pinical of the current domestic open water swimming season as the athletes embark on their journey to Tokyo 2020 and beyond.
