Team SA: How they fared on day 3

Team SA were in action across six sporting codes on day three of the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires on Tuesday 9 October. They have two medals, a gold and a silver. In 2014, Team SA won one medal, a gold.

Women’s 800m freestyle heat/final: Kate Beavon finished sixth in her heat in 8min 59.60sec for 14th overall. Gold went to Hungary’s Anja Kesely in 8:27.60.
Women’s 50m butterfly: Dune Coetzee finished second in her heat in 28.70, but that was only enough for 29th overall and she failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Men’s 50m backstroke: Hendrick Duvenhage finished seventh in his heat in 26.97, which placed him 21st overall and he failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Women’s 100m breaststroke: Christin Mundell finished sixth in her heat in 1:11.58, which placed her 20th overall and she failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
Men’s 50m freestyle: Gabriel Nortje finished fourth in his heat in 23.02, which placed him seventh overall and qualified him for the semi-finals. There he finished seventh in 23.22, which dropped him to 14th fastest and failing to reach the final.
Women’s 200m backstroke: Mariella Venter finished seventh in her heat in 2:18.70, which placed her 18th overall and she failed to reach the final.
Men’s 4x100m freestyle: Team SA, comprised of Ethan du Preez, Hendrik Duvenhage, Gabriel Nortje and Michael Houlie placed eighth in the final in 3:31.19, some 13.08 seconds behind Russia, who won gold ahead of Brazil and Italy.
