Jazz Carlin missed out in her bid to claim a medal in her first major open water swimming competition after the Wiltshire swimmer finished 14th in the 10km race at the European Championships today.

Swindon swimmer Carlin, who lives in Bradford on Avon, has made the switch after a successful career in the pool, capped by two silver medals at the Rio Olympics two years ago.

However, the 27-year-old is still learning her trade at the new discipline and could not contend with the leading pack in Glasgow.

Dutchwoman Sharon van Rouwendaal claimed gold at Loch Lomond, following up her victory in the 5km race earlier in the competition.

Italy’s Giulia Gabrielleschi claimed silver, with another Dutch swimmer, Esmee Vermuelen taking bronze.

Carlin’s season has been hampered by illness after it was revealed she was suffering from pneumonia earlier this year, which denied her the chance to end her career in the pool on the podium at April’s Commonwealth Games.

However, Carlin confirmed she was back to full health and feeling near her best again in the lead-up to the European Championships.
