Olympic swimming pool upgrade discussion heats up

by ZwemZa on June 13th, 2018

The incomplete Olympic heated swimming pool, that has been under construction at Umgabaga beach since 2016, came under scrutiny by the eThekwini Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) during its sitting on Tuesday, 5 June.

Democratic Alliance spokesman and ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge expressed concern that the 14-month contract, with a value of R43 837,359 and awarded for construction by Serengeti Interiors cc, was dragging behind schedule with direct implications to sport, sport tourism, tourism in general and the overall upliftment of the larger southern area.

“This while the neighbouring Winklespruit pool remains closed for maintenance and the Rachel Finlayson pool on the Durban beachfront remains standing empty and the subject of controversy,” said Cllr Beetge.

“The city engineering’s architecture department reported that delays were caused by rectification to defective workmanship which has since been addressed, as well as delayed additional contract authority from their client department. With the contractor committing to ‘fast track’ the progress, the expected completion date is now set for November, in time for the festive season.

Once complete, the Umgababa pool will become the city’s competition pool of choice, which will in turn, bring sport tourism and related business opportunities to the southern areas. One would just hope that both the promises and the pool are able to hold water,” said Cllr Beetge.
