CANA Zone IV water polo championships conclude in Durban

The CANA Zone IV Junior Water Polo Championships concluded in Durban today, with the South African men’s U18 team adding their name to the 4th FINA World Junior Water Polo Championships qualification list.

They finished second behind Egypt after a powerful win against Zimbabwe in their final match, scoring 10 goals to Zimbabwe’s 2.

Both the men’s and ladies’ qualification to the World Junior Water Polo Championships are subject to final approval from FINA, with the men’s competition to be held in Szombathely in Hungary from 11th to 19th August, while the women’s event will take place in Belgrade, Serbia from 27th August to 2nd September 2018.

It was a South African battle in the CANA Championships men’s final, with the U17 side taking the honours and claiming the gold medal, netting 9 goals to the 4 goals scored by their U16 opponents.

In the ladies’ CANA Championships final, the Zimbabwe U18A side came out on top, winning the gold medal from South Africa’s U17 team by 7 goals to 3, while the Zimbabwean U18B team walked away with the bronze after beating South Africa’s U16 team by 7 goals to 2.
