Synchro swimming – Mixed Duet Technical

  • Bill May (USA) hopes to repeat his gold medal success from 2015 when he became the first man to win a world title in any Synchro event, in the mixed duet technical event.
  • His partner this year is Kanako Kitao Spendlove (USA), who won four medals at the world championships in 2003 and 2005 in total representing Japan, and she took silver with Japan in the women’s team event at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
  • This is the only Synchro event in World Championship history that has not yet been won by Russia.

·    At the 2015 FINA World Championships, United States claimed the gold medal in the inaugural mixed duet technical event.
·    Bill May (USA) and Christina Jones (USA) were the first swimmers to win this event.
·    May will now partner with Kanako Spendlove (USA, born Kitao) who won the world title in the free combination in 2003 representing Japan.
·    Spendlove (G1-S3) won four medals at the World Championships in 2003 and 2005 in total and she took silver with Japan in the women’s team event at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
·    Russia claimed the silver medal in this event two years ago, making it the only synchro event in the programme in Budapest it has never won at the World Championships.
·    Aleksandr Maltsev (RUS) and Mikhaela Kalancha (RUS) will compete for Russia. Maltsev took the silver medal in this event two years ago and he won the gold medal in the mixed duet free in 2015.
·    Kalancha has won four gold medals at the World Championships, in the team technical routine (2) and in the free combination (2).
·    Italy finished third in this event in 2015, claiming one of three medals the country has won in synchro at the World Championships (coming to these World Championships), alongside bronze medals in the mixed duet free routine (2015) and in the solo free routine (2009).

Diving – 3m Springboard Synchro Women

  • Shi Tingmao (CHN) can win her fifth gold medal in Diving at the World Championships, and her third in this event
  • China won each of the last eight world titles in this event.
  • Jennifer Abel (CAN) can become the first non-Chinese diver to claim a medal in this event at four consecutive World Championships.
  • Maddison Keeney (AUS) won the 1m Springboard Women in Budapest and she could become the first Australian diver to win two gold medals at the World Championships.

Diving – 10 Platform Synchro Men

  • Patrick Hausding (GER) and Sascha Klein (GER) can win a record-equalling third medal in this event.
  • Thomas Daley (GBR) could become the fourth man to win world titles in three different events. He won the 10m Platform Men in 2009 and the Mixed Team event in 2015.
  • Chinese duos have won six of the nine men’s 10m platform synchro events at the World Championships.

·  In 2015, Lin Yue (CHN) and Chen Aisen (CHN) won the gold medal.

·  Chen could join Tian Liang (CHN) on two world championship gold medals in this event. Only Huo Liang (CHN, 3) and Lin Yue (3) won this event more often.

·  Chen and Yang Hao (CHN) won all four men’s 10m platform synchro events in the FINA Diving World Series this season.

·  Behind Chen and Yang, German duo Patrick Hausding (GER) and Sascha Klein (GER) finished in second place at all four FINA Diving World Series meets this season.

·  Klein and Hausding won this event at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona. Both can join Tian Liang on two world championship gold medals in this event. Only Huo Liang (3) and Lin Yue (3) have won this event more often.

·  Klein and Hausding also took the world championship silver medal in men’s 10m platform synchro in 2011. The duo can    join Huo Liang (G3), Lin Yue (G3), Tian Liang (G2-B1) and Hu Jia (CHN, G1-S1-B1) on a record three medals in this event.

·  Germany could become the second country, after China, two win this event multiple times at the world championships.

·  Apart from China and Germany, Russia (2005) and Australia (2003) are the only other two countries to have won the men’s 10m platform synchro.

·  At the 2015 FINA World Championships, Iván Garcia (MEX) and Germán Sánchez (MEX) took the silver medal, while Roman Izmailov (RUS) and Viktor Minibaev (RUS) claimed the bronze medal.

·  Minibaev paired up with Aleksandr Bondar (RUS) in the FINA Diving World Series this season, claiming three third place finishes.

·  Minibaev/Bondar can become the second Russian duo to win this event, after Dmitri Dobroskok (RUS) and Gleb Galperin (RUS) in 2005.

·  Thomas Daley (GBR) and Daniel Goodfellow (GBR) took the bronze medal in this event at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

·  The best result by a British duo in this event at the world championships is a third place by Peter Waterfield (GBR) and Leon Taylor (GBR) in 2005.

Water Polo – Men

  • Host nation Hungary hope to win a fourth world title in men’s water polo.
  • Hosts have finished in the top three only twice in 16 previous instalments of the men’s water polo World Championship. In 1973, Yugoslavia claimed a bronze medal in Belgrade. In 1994, Italy took the gold in Rome.
  • Since the London 2012 Olympic Games, where Croatia won gold, Serbia have won all 11 major tournaments, except the 2013 world championship, which was won by Hungary.
  • In this run since 2012, Serbia won Olympic gold (2016), the world title (2015), the European Championship (2014, 2016), the European Games (2015) and the World League (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017)

Croatia are the only team that has won a medal at each of the last five world championships, winning their first and only world title so far in 2007.
